My point is true sparring does limit dangerous techniques but you can still do a mock version. I think the problem in your statement is that you think that to spar means you are training for the ring, when in many arts this is not true. I spar to train for whats real and out there. All I'm saying is sparring is integral to attaining true fighting skills, and it is not the antithesis of technique.

Eluding to your other point in my class safety equipment is minimal, and I have personally practiced in hard and soft sparring where techniques such as headbutts, bites, and eye gouges were taught-- mma fouls.
I want to establish this fact first so you understand that I am not one of those mma everything else S**ks know-it-alls. I am someone whom is truly interested in martial arts-- I have sat in and even joined hung gar/shaolin chuan schools on occassion-- but through experience I have learned alot about what works and doesn't work along the way.
By vegetatown [Affiliate User] 1196252434 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI started out in goju ryu for two years. From there I lost interest-- losing a fight to three people pretty badly-- and switched to boxing, burmese kachin lethwei+ naban--grappling. I trained in these styles about a year or two before everyone started jumping on the mma bandwagon-- a terrible plague of know-it-alls.

By vainman [Affiliate User] 1196234313 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou cannot use many techniques in full contact sparring because of safety considerations. Safety equipment also precludes alot of actual techniques. Have you trained in martial arts, and ever been in a ring? They are often two different things. Even MMA in all its glory does not allow many true jujitsu maneauvers.
By vainman [Affiliate User] 1196234246 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemy point is that I have watched many start sparring before they had any technique. It would be better to train in boxing if this is what you want to do. Many martial arts techniques cannot be used in full contact sparring because they are too dangerous, not because they are not effective.
By vainman [Affiliate User] 1196234080 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDon't forget that the old masters who created these arts practiced this way--sparring-- as well. It is all a process of trial and error after all.

Full contact sparring is always sloppy initially because, just as in forms practice, it is an art that takes alot of time and practice. There is no degradation of technique, the technique improves independently with time, and by doing so in a more realistic physical scenario as well teaches the body many things-- after all it is all about the mind teaching/connecting with the body.

By vainman [Affiliate User] 1196088809 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeall of you guys kill me. When in a fight, it is really the level of skill that the fighters have that determines the outcome, not the style.
Some styles have techiques that are more effective in situations, but that is it.
Wushu just looks pretty to me. I mean if a Wushu practitioner was to fight a Judoka then when the Judoka gets hold of the Wushu practitioner thats basically the end of it. Unless the Wushu practitioner manages to KO the Judoka or something

By actracts [Affiliate User] 1196082524 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei study Wing Chun ... (same form that Bruce Lee studied) ... i was always taught ... if it looks pretty its most likely useless ... wing chun is not pretty ... but its amazing effective ... i have also spent time studying Ju-Jitsu ... and i would have to agreed with it ... both Wing Chun And Ju-Jitsu are close quarters combat skills ... wushu looks like a midrange martial art ...

You would have the exact same situation with say, 1.3 billion Portuguese.
