Chicks 1st 24 Hrs 7-8 Jul 09 12 Hrs Apart

This video shows two baby pigeons that are about 24 hrs and 12 hrs old. The mother's name is Petey. Petey fell from her nest as a baby in the French Quarter of New Orleans and has been raised with only people since then. She has laid eggs and sat on them faithfully for years but she didn't know why she was sitting on them. She always gave up after about three weeks since they didn't hatch. She has never been with a guy pigeon. Finally, to give her some chicks to raise we got two fertilized eggs from a pigeon breeder and replaced the eggs she had just laid with the fertile eggs. About 18 days later they hatched, about 12 hours apart. Petey was surprised and excited about this new development but seems to be taking care of them well. We are not sure if she has started feeding them since most of the time they are hidden under her. I guess nature will tell her what to do next since no one else has explained any of this to her so far and she has been doing OK. This video happens about 24 hours after the first chick hatched. You will see the two chicks tussling together, Petey cleaning one chick and Petey pulling one chick back towards her by grabbing the chick's beak and maybe feeding the chick.
