This was a video I shot and put together to show to the fam and friends a few years back illustrating an average day teaching English in Japan.

It all takes place in the city of Oita, about a 90 minute flight south west of Tokyo, on Kyushu island.

This is LONG, about 37 minutes, but will show what teaching English overseas, particularly in Japan, is like.

Lots of folks have asked how one can get over to Japan to teach English. One fantastic way(with a B.A. of any variety) is JET: http://www.jetprogramme.org/

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to message me.

  • Love how the ...

Love how the convenient store sells Fresh Sand. And I don't think I'd appreciate having to go outside to find clothes to wear.

  • gamersfun: Yup, you ...

gamersfun: Yup, you are right. JET is public schools for the most part. AND working privately while on JET is technically a "No-no".

But, by the time I made this video, I had moved on from JET to teach privately. The good point was that I could really fill up my time with lessons (good money), the bad part was being ultra-busy.

  • I was just ...

I was just wondering if the Jet Programme was the way you started teaching? I see that you are teaching privatley which confused me at first because I thought the Jet Programme was a school deal. Or was the private teaching a side deal for extra income?

  • Yeah that's also ...

Yeah that's also true. I mean its obvious you speak english to your students and maybe people who know you from giving english lessons. But for example you go to a store and ask "where are the brownies" instead of the japanese version it would be rather rude
Yeah i have watched some other videos, i saw.
I also loved the video, gave me a good idea about the local life in Japan, its western but still alot more different then here in Europe.Keep up the good work man

  • Actually, I've been ...

Actually, I've been studying Japanese during my spare time more about a year now and it's not difficult at all. (I'm 14) But at first, it may seem a bit..."confusing". That is 'til U get used to the way it is spoken, the context, the pronunciation, etc.
    Just remember: Subject>Object>Verb. ^^
Note: America uses Subject>Verb>Object and Japan uses Subject>Object>Verb. So instead of who slapped what, it's who what slapped. XD

  • somebodybur: ...

somebodybur: Absolutely... 100% agreed. Yup, slowly but surely I became familiar with Japanese. In some of my newer videos you can see it spoken more often.

One note: in English classes, we are paid to speak and teach in English. If they want an explanation in Japanese, they will ask the Japanese English teachers.

  • Hello. I just ...

    Hello.

I just can't thank you enough for taking the time and effort to make this video. Every little detail is covered as thoroughly as anyone could want, and it's done with style and a sense of humor, too.

Many of us would love to live and work in Japan, and you've offered a wealth of information to go on, and kept it realistic.

IMHO, you deserve some kind of award for this. Thank you so much!
