So many devices used over the centuries to separate our corporeal selves from our spiritual entities. We are a house divided within ourselves. This division is the bread and butter of all economies. Statistics are meaningless without causes or rationale. Why are so many people depressed? There are a million personal reasons all stemming from one root. That root is that we live in a society that moulds it's constituents as opposed to a society moulded by its constituents.

Yeah if a private company is selling a product, its priority is getting money in shareholders' pockets; thus a pharma company won't go out of its way to ensure their drugs get used only by those who really need them. They'll try to sell them to everyone like they're Big Macs.
Watching Sandy is better than taking a Prozac in my opinion :-)

In the context of the statement the intention here was not to imply antidepressants causes suicide, but simply that they don't do a good job preventing it.

A new study out of Sweden this week showed that more than half of all the female suicides received an antidepressants prescription within six week of taking their own lives.

Similar information is coming to light in the US as well. The National Violent Death Reporting System tracked suicides in 7 states and found that 59% of the suicides were currently taking medication for mental health issues.

If you add in the antipsychotics in with the antidepressants in the Swedish study, the percent was 61% of the female suicides were on a current mental health medication.

Thanks for the clarification. I mentioned it because the video uses the statement that "suicide today is twice the rate of the 1950's", to imply a connection to anti-depressants. As your figures show, that's clearly not the case. The highest rate in 1975 was well before widely-used SSRI's came on the market. Basing an argument on flawed information erodes the credibility of what is truly an important viewpoint.

According to the WHO the suicide rate in the U.S. in 1950 was 7.6 per 10k. It peeked in 1975 at 12.7 and in 2000 it was 10.4.

The decline since 1985 is 12.3 to 10.4 per 10k which is still much higher than 7.6 in 1950.

finally - Yes, antidepressants are overused,
This happened for a few reasons that all came together - a)SSRI's - no more effective than older drugs, but with fewer side effects, came out b)the US changed advertising rules to allow drug makers to advertise directly to consumers. c)insurers found that drugs were cheaper than therapy. d)since most of our medical research is funded by the private sector, little money has been available to research treatments such as exercise, and diet.

In the interest of telling the whole story, I thought I'd mention a) US suidide rates have remained pretty stable since the 1940's, If anything they appear to have slightly declined in recent years. (US dept of HHS) also b) All the countries that you list as being happier than the US, also have higher suicide rates than the US (except the Phillipines) (WHO). Both assertions can be true, of course (they measure different variables).

sandy - entertaining broadcast - and you're cute ;-) I'd go out with you in a second even if you don't shave your legs. Anyway.. that magic lightbulb? They do exist- Cities use them in traffic lights. The tradeoff is they cost many times more than a regular bulb, and they use more electricity. So I'm not sure it qualifies as a conspiracy. We consumers do this to ourselves - look at florescents - last longer, save money! But they cost more initially so sales have been weak.

The information is great. I believe the drug companies are abusing the economics of medicine. BTW, Sandy, did you know you have great legs? LOL I guess it's whatever gets them in the door.

Don't get too excited about that. I'm pretty sure she's just re-creating what society has emarked on YOU.

You comment around 5:00 "obviously you can't wear X with Y or you look like a slut" doesn' appear to be tongue in cheek. Have they got to even you such that you think it is unacceptable to combine whatever two items of clothing you're talking about?

thats for providing some very good research and very logical arguments.

it is more confusing here though because it seems you are pointing out the stupidity of the pantyhose and shaving concepts that were evidentally invented to make a profit, and how it relates to the same antidepressant scheme...correct?
yet, how come YOU still wear pantyhose and shave your legs if you essentially admit it is stupid (paraphrasing here)??

okay...now I watched the video but i do not see a relation to the other one except in the fact that you are dressing in was which is to me, in the same incongruent manner as after this.
