They certainly do; they can be found in Indonesia. Look for the Komodo dragon.

If you live your life by the philosophy of the Tao I don't see where you can go wrong.

I recently asked a dear friend of mine who studies Kung Fu about your enquiry. She told me that each Kung Fu form is in the spirit of each animal which bears it's name and not necessarily the physical attributes.

The dragon may not truly exist, but the spirit of this legendary beast is well documented in Chinese mythology. Therefore a Kung Fu form based on the dragon's spirit has been developed along these lines.

I suppose the Shaolin philosophy is as spiritually and phycially balanced as one can get. To achieve the physical and mental powers that would make you almost invulnerable to any man, but still remain a dedicated pacifist.

And yes, born out of necessity. Buddhisim has had a rough past in fuedalist age China.

I took Kung Fu off and on for a couple years in the Mantis system. So much practice was done on form before I ever hit a bag or a kick target. Form is EVERYTHING. Kung Fu is incredibly fluid and flowing in it's application.

I always found it interesting that a system was derived from the Dragon, a creature that supposedly never existed.

Or did it?

It truly changed my life. From '75 on I was on the kungfu trail.

there is nothing like this on television anymore. i loved watching this as a child, i know it influenced my beliefs and view of life. it introduced me to taoism.

only a TV show but wow...

now at least we have american idol...

Awesome. I'm trying to find out more about the men who played the monks. I know they had two LA-area kung fu teachers as technical advisors and fight masters on the show. Probably the monks were played by men from those kwoons.
