In this clip from the pilot episode, young Caine is being instructed by Master Kan on the unity of all things. In the Shaolin tradition, harmony between mind and body is achieved by reflecting the grace seen in the animal kingdom. Master Kan reminds us that discord is something only known to man; since in nature there is only ever harmony between the species.

This video was taken from the 1970's TV series 'Kung Fu' (Created by Ed Spielman, Herman Miller and Jerry Thorpe). It is essentially an American Western set in the latter half of the 1800's, with an Eastern hero who has neither a gun or a horse. The story follows the adventures of Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine); a nature loving Shaolin priest, who had recently fled China. He speaks softly but is no pushover. He lives humbly yet knows great contentment.

Each episode also takes the viewer back to Caine's childhood in the Shaolin temple. It is here under the instruction of the wonderfully charismatic Master Po (Keye Luke) and the stern yet loving Master Kan (Philip Ahn), young Caine (Radames Pera / Keith Carradine) learns the harmoniously balanced ways of Tao.

The teachings of the Shaolin was meticulously researched for the Kung Fu series. This makes Kung Fu one of the most authentic interpretations of Philosophical Taoism available in popular culture. I was therefore surprised to see no one else had presented selected scenes from Kung Fu as an introduction to the Taoist philosophy. This is one of about 30 clips I'll be posting here during 2008.

  • I recently asked a ...

I recently asked a dear friend of mine who studies Kung Fu about your enquiry. She told me that each Kung Fu form is in the spirit of each animal which bears it's name and not necessarily the physical attributes.

The dragon may not truly exist, but the spirit of this legendary beast is well documented in Chinese mythology. Therefore a Kung Fu form based on the dragon's spirit has been developed along these lines.

I hope this sheds some light on your enquiry.

    Your welcome.

I suppose the Shaolin philosophy is as spiritually and phycially balanced as one can get. To achieve the physical and mental powers that would make you almost invulnerable to any man, but still remain a dedicated pacifist.

And yes, born out of necessity. Buddhisim has had a rough past in fuedalist age China.

  • I took Kung Fu off ...

I took Kung Fu off and on for a couple years in the Mantis system. So much practice was done on form before I ever hit a bag or a kick target. Form is EVERYTHING. Kung Fu is incredibly fluid and flowing in it's application.

I always found it interesting that a system was derived from the Dragon, a creature that supposedly never existed.

    Or did it?

Awesome. I'm trying to find out more about the men who played the monks. I know they had two LA-area kung fu teachers as technical advisors and fight masters on the show. Probably the monks were played by men from those kwoons.
