Good question.
I prefer pericardium for VSD repair for three reasons. 1. The patch will be very close to the aortic valve, and native pericardium is less likely to damage the valve than a sythetic (Goretex) patch. 2. Pericardium handles well surgically and conforms to irregular edges and chords around the margin of the VSD. 3. Pericardium is free, Goretex is expensive.
