The AH-64 Apache helicopter bears the most deadly, yet sophisticated, weapons system ever developed for an attack helicopter. The Apache's 16 Hellfire laser-designated missiles, each with an operational range of over 8000 meters (5 miles), are used primarily for the destruction of tanks, armored vehicles and other hard material targets. The Apache can also deliver 76, 2.75" Folding Fin Aerial Rockets (FFAR) for use against enemy personnel, light armor vehicles and other soft-skinned targets at ranges over 3,400 m (2 miles). Rounding out the Apache's deadly arsenal is the infamous 30mm automatic Hughes M230 Chain cannon. Powered by a 6.5 hp electric motor, in less than .2 seconds the M230 fires at a rate of 10 12-ounce shells per second. Thus, a 6 second burst of fire delivers approximately 45 pounds of shells. These High Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP) rounds feature a hollow charge and fragmenting case, and easily penetrate 2 inch thick rolled steel armor at a ranges up to 4,000 m (2.5 miles). Though intended as an anti-material/anti-armor weapon, and considered "overkill" for solely anti-personnel purposes, the M230 is nevertheless often used at long ranges to inconspicuously eliminate hostile enemy combatants who are not even aware of a helicopter's presence. Indeed, the M230's muzzle velocity of 800 m/s (2,600 ft/sec or .5 mi/sec), allows it to eliminate targets at maximum range a full 6 seconds before the sound of its gunfire reaches their position, though at this range the sound may no longer be audible at all.
