Jumping into Giant Waves

All we see in the video is a window on the world. there's no pan shots to show what's further up or down the shore. For all we know, there's a reef just off-screen.

and though I don't surf ocean waves regularly, I surf, kayak, and canoe white-water rivers, and work for the city's floodwater rescue service. Examining the video for actual danger, I see big waves coming in. The water's gotta go somewhere, so it's flowing out along the bottom, and strong, since it can't go up like the waves can

You clearly dont surf. Yes being a surfer and playing in big waves is not dangerous. Have you actually examined the video to see if there was any actual danger? Would you know where to look?

I don't follow your reasoning. Somehow being a surfer makes playing in big waves not dangerous? ok, they might know how to swim to counter riptides and undertow, but that doesn't remove the danger: just manages it, and only partly.

at least, nothing that we can see... though the guy on the ladder who helps grab his friend at least shows they were looking out for each other...

I agree with you wafne, people should never risk their lives without any protection or safety, not only in the violent sea but also in everything they do radical in their lives. But I must say, those guys were crazy as hell, because there weren't any safe-guards to help them, not even a life vest.

Well, if you know what the bottom looks like in calm water, it's at higher tides (and with storm-surge on top of that) it could be safe, as far as hitting the bottom is concerned. If the people doing it are strong swimmers, it could be ok. if they've got people standing by on rescue, it could be safe. I'd do it, but I'd want a pfd and a helmet on. but I'm a white water paddler and rescue tech. *shrug*
