  • ...china produces ...

...china produces still steam locs and people laugh at them, why do we idiots think actually that something which is easy to repair, simple to produce, cheaper to use and hence stronger than our diesel locs, but harder to work in,out of our time is? im sure china profits a lot.

  • ...a liter of ...

...a liter of diesel costs 1 euro 20 cents in germany.that makes 1200euro for a 1000 liter.but a ton of coal costs here 300 euro!!!this is just a quarter of price!...when i hear from people that,a steam loc manages to get some 1000km and needs for that only 1,5 tons of coal, this makes only 500 euro...you cannot make this even by a truck.

  • i got from many ...

i got from many sources acknowledged, that steam units are actually cheaper to use...and they do not need much repairings, and they use water....in germany there were steam locs which run 100 miles(200km),which would be used as a fast train loc.and a loc enginer told me ones that they are also NOT that weak

  • My dad used to take ...

My dad used to take my brother and me to old Union Station (long since demolished) in Columbus Ohio to watch the locomotives steam through. We would go right down to the track level and be so close that I could reach right out and almost touch them. The steam, the smoke and the roar was the most wonderful memory in my childhood. There is nothing today to compare. I miss them.............

"Diesel Electric" Loco Hp rating is different from a Steam Loco's
Steam is Directed drive Hp and a Diesel Electric is past through the Electric Traction Motors. Its the Electric Traction Motors that do the motivating not the Diesel Motors. That's way they called up the Steam to help on Montin Grad's. Traction Motors on the Diesel's get to hot. On a Steam there's nothing to get Hot! There's No limit to a Steam thay keep going tell something blow apart! GO STEAM!

  • GE C44-9s put out ...

GE C44-9s put out 4400 hp. That's what the "44" in the model designation stands for. 3751's boiler puts out 5000 hp. From there down to the wheels it ends up at about 3600 hp in drawbar pull. Most diesel powered trains that are below certain wieght to power ratios don't extra locs. Whatever's on the front will do. Steam almost always needed extra locs to get up mountain grades. Steam was ideal for flater territory & high speeds, & diesels were ideal for steep grades & low speeds.

  • those 2 amtrak locs ...

those 2 amtrak locs are there for dynamic breaking on long steep down grades. 3751 pulled a water tender, 2 diesels, & 13 passenger cars up cajon pass w/out any help at all. any rail person w/ good ears can tell you that. I volunteer w/ that group (sbrhs) confirmed that info w/ the president of that group. diesels w/ steam locs are for back-up purposes only.
