Great movie - I was captivated by it as an aircraft mad 10 year old. Went out and borrow a book on SAC from our local library which was good too. Wonder if you can get it on DVD now? Oh yes and Jimmy Stewart was the real deal!!

This is one of my favorite movies. While neither Henry Fonda or Glenn Ford were in the movie, you will find June Allyson,Harry Morgan, and Frank Lovejoy.

Pratt R-4360 engines were 28 cylinder,(basically 4, 7 cylinder WASP engines couple togeether)available up to 4,000 hp. configuration.B-36 needed hellaciously long runway for takeoff before addition of GE jetpods on wingtips. Oh,by the way, Jimmy Stewart retired as a GENERAL from Air Force Reserve.

The movie is Strategic Air Command, starring Glenn Ford, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda. It is EXCELLENT.

It looks as if the pilot taps on the brakes to stop the wheels from spinning right as the landing gear is being retracted. We had a cutaway of the R-4360 in the school where I trained for my A&P license (Reedley College, Reedley, California, U.S.A. Such sweet madness!

Had an uncle to said that each engine literally ate oil. There was a 100 gal. tank on each engine and it wasn't unusual for missions to be shortened due to one or more engines running dry.

It is reportedly not scrapped, but partially disassembled and in private ownership.

sorry...in my opinion the design is teribble, its a huge and very impressing bird...but the design itself..no...I dont like it..it looks kind of improvised....in my eyes...
my opinion has nothing tom do with my nationality...its the opinion of a guy who likes the USA and their idols...freedom and democracy...but the B 36 wasnt a peacemaker..it was a war-prevender...and thats the good part of its history

Jimmy Stewart who stared in this movie aslo commanded a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber sqaudron in World War Two and he did fly missions over Europe!

I worked on the RB36 as a Engine Mechanic during the early fiftie's. My unit was the 99th Strat Recon at Fairchild AFB Wn. The R4360 Engine was the largest Recip Engine ever built. It developed 3800 Horse power.

I flew C-130's and we could burn avgas as an alternative fuel with no modifications. That was a last resort type of thing though and I personally never had to do it. And as far as I can tell, all those hybrid recip/jet planes of old burned straight avgas.

I assume the same mods were done for the USN's Neptune and Mercator patrol a/c?
The AJ Savage had a jet engine buried in the rear fuselage too.
I always thought they had two types of fuel.
