For quite some time, Ronald Mallett has been working on plans for a time machine. This machine uses a ring laser and the theory of relativity. Mallett first argued that the ring laser would produce a limited amount of frame-dragging which might be measured experimentally, saying:

In Einstein's general theory of relativity, both matter and energy can create a gravitational field. This means that the energy of a light beam can produce a gravitational field. My current research considers both the weak and strong gravitational fields produced by a single continuously circulating unidirectional beam of light. In the weak gravitational field of a unidirectional ring laser, it is predicted that a spinning neutral particle, when placed in the ring, is dragged around by the resulting gravitational field.

In a later paper, he argued that at sufficient energies, the circulating laser might produce not just frame-dragging but also closed timelike curves, allowing time travel into the past:

For the strong gravitational field of a circulating cylinder of light, I have found new exact solutions of the Einstein field equations for the exterior and interior gravitational fields of the light cylinder. The exterior gravitational field is shown to contain closed timelike lines.
The presence of closed timelike lines indicates the possibility of time travel into the past. This creates the foundation for a time machine based on a circulating cylinder of light.

Funding for his program, now known as The Space-time Twisting by Light (STL) project, is progressing. Full details on the project, Mallett's theories, a list of upcoming public lectures and links to popular articles on his work can be found at the professor's UConn web page, and an illustration showing the concept on which Mallett has designed the time machine can be seen on a Geocities webpage.

He also wrote a book titled Time Traveler: A Scientist's Personal Mission to Make Time Travel a Reality, co-written with New York Times best-selling author Bruce B. Henderson, that was first published in 2006. In June 2008, motion picture director Spike Lee's production company announced it had acquired the film rights to Mallett's book. Lee is co-writing the movie script and directing the picture.

  • Agreed. If they ...

Agreed. If they were identical to ours in every detail, then yes same things would happen.

I've not yet heard of theory that suggests the alternate universes/dimensions are exactly like ours.

  • its like if a train ...

its like if a train was heading for the tunnel and another train is on the same way then they will hit each other right ?

  • i can try but im ...

i can try but im only 12 years old and i just started watching thiss thing abaout time machines earlier today but i can try
the thing is if these parralel unvierses are ECXACTLY like ouers then if we travel to another universe they will do the same thing and then are we example gonna hit each other on the road ?
or if exampl i travel back 10 minutes and kill some guy then the parralel unvierse me will do the same thing
    hope thats enough ^^

  • "if like a person ...

"if like a person travels to a parralel unvierse and kills a human the parralel universe person will travel to our universe and kill a human to another little paradox"

This is interesting. Can you explain further please?

  • and by the way they ...

and by the way they made 1 little mistake:
if like a person travels to a parralel unvierse and kills a human the parralel universe person will travel to our universe and kill a human to
    another little paradox

    One thing:
is this dangarius ? if they make so incenebly strong gravity as strong as a black hole then wont it kill us ?

  • Perhaps paradoxes ...

Perhaps paradoxes exist only in the mind.

  • and to say there is ...

and to say there is no paradox if theres is a multiverse is pretty stupid. a saying comes to mind. "dont put all your eggs in one basket"

if theres no multiverse then paradoxes will exist. and so time travel depends on the multiverse theories being true. rather alot of hope here!

  • this doesnt work... ...

this doesnt work... theres the grandfather paradox for going back in time but this guy doesnt mention any paradoxs going faward in time. If it wasnt a particle but a person you could go faward in time and be killed by your future self. But then your future self couldnt then exist as the passed self is dead. PARADOX!!!

also his coffee analogy doesnt work. how is light swirling around twisting space in it? the coffee is an actuall mass moving just like anything on earth. so its not comparable

He sending particles ahead so when he cuts on the machine, he will be recieving info from the future :D paradox!

  • instead of this ...

instead of this being due to the force of gravity as is the case in classical mechanics. This is incompatible with classical mechanics and special relativity because in those theories inertially moving objects cannot accelerate with respect to each other, but objects in free fall do so." So; indeed there is no paradox; but then it is still true that you cannot change the past. Instead emphasis should be put on interdimensional travel, adn it's benefits/or drawbacks.

  • The upshot of this ...

The upshot of this is that free fall is inertial motion: In other words an object in free fall is falling because that is how objects move when there is no force being exerted on them,

  • Einstein's theory ...

Einstein's theory of relativity as per WIki:
"General relativity is a theory of gravitation developed by Einstein in the years 19071915. The development of general relativity began with the equivalence principle, under which the states of accelerated motion and being at rest in a gravitational field (for example when standing on the surface of the Earth) are physically identical.
