Their ears grow to adult size first, so they get awkward until they're over a year old. Don't let the little legs fool you, though. They can run like a bat out of hell when they want to.

Yes, that's true. I've seen pictures of the St. Hubert Hound. Too bad they are extinct. Basset history is interesting. George Washington received some Bassets from La Fayette. Washington referred to them as "bench legged Beagles."

One more thing; Basset Hounds were originally bred from French Bloodhounds and the Hounds of St. Hubert. The reason Basset Hounds are so cute, and have such a pleasant personality, is because their progenitor breed was bred by a saint. True story; check the history on the world book encyclopedia, any edition.

vets can do the procedure painlessly, and without disfiguring the dog. Generally though they only do it when the dog is fully grown, not when they're pups. If you DO do it for the sake of the dog's health, you would have to get a vet that specializes in cosmetic surgery for dogs. Cosmetic surgery for health that is. Also, the more expensive, the better. Nothing is too good for a Basset Hound!

She is a year old now and she still steps on them! :)

My 3 year old Basset's ears are just fine and she still occasionally steps on them when she is tracking some interesting scent. (Bassets ears are long to hold the scent). Putting a snood over the ears is a more humane way to protect them.
