While most police cars are tuned up, the extra weight that they have to carry in terms of equipment and the extra drag from the light gantry actually means that at best they are about the same speed as the regular cars they are made from.

Thats why they use a helicopter. Even then the straight line speed of a chopper is less than most of the high performance cars these days. In Montana a chopper would be screwed. Watch the 70s film "the gumball rally"

you're right. A crown vic or charger is nothing compared to an M5. As long as you follow the law. Which cops don't have too. Ive seen under the hood of a police car, and there's nothing normal about it. Im not a car expert, but i know a fair amount about modding, and there were so many extra components attached to the engine. There's so much illegal power in a police cruiser. And don't even get me started on fords police interceptor model.
