I think it's deeper than just being masculine. A part of him knows he could be happy but he's been so miserable getting drunk, drama, etc. that he's found comfort in it.

His happiness would not be good for his poems. For his "book sales in europe."

i think u should reconsider the line about not being dumb lol. this poem is fairly easy to interpret: he's a sensitive guy but feels the need to portray a strong, masculine front in his everyday life, while surpressing his true inner feelings and only really letting them have free reign while he's laying in bed alone at night
