Wanted to make my Coat Hanger HDTV Antenna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw ) able to pick up VHF. By using the guts if my previous antenna (RCA ANT585 Amplified uhf/vhf hdtv antenna)
and attaching them methodically to the original 'coat hanger HDTV antenna' i was able to make VHF/UHF happen. this is a vid my working antenna. Now i can watch PBS, which in my city is a VHF channel.

i know i didn't explain this very good. sorry. i might make a more in depth video if people want.

  • I made the coat ...

I made the coat hanger yesterday.
What I want to try is adding two wires, one on each side of its output before the balum, each about 2.5 feet long. Basically connecting a half wave dipole.
I'll try with aligator clips first.
    Spread out horizontally.
    Worth a try

  • you gotta realize ...

    you gotta realize the frequencies
uhf is 300mhz to 3ghz and vhf is 30mhz to 300mhz
    also-
vhf antenna tend to have very large elements compared to uhf
google up images of vhf and uhf antenna and look at the size differences

  • Excellent post! ...

Excellent post! This is a most innovative upgrade and I commend and thank you for your post. You explained it very well. I will use copper. Do you have any estimate as to how far away from a transmission tower the signals are good for with this antenna (VHF or UHF)? Does anyone else have estimates?

  • When you do please ...

When you do please shine more light. The video is way too dark!

Also please show if there is reason to get a 20 dollar VHF antenna to hack rather than a 5 dollar one.

  • Thanks for the ...

    Thanks for the video.

DTV is a weird thing. Most of the time it is either a "Works" or "Nope" situation. In contrast to the days where even strong signals were influenced by stuff happening nearby.

This has been a nice video but frankly it seems more like a "Look what I did!" video rather than explaining exactly how the build went.

I request it redone because it is so important. People are flocking to videos like yours to find out about VHF reception.

    MORE LIGHT!

I would think it would be better to use copper wire because it's a better conductor rather than coat hanger wire or aluminum
