~Video clip of aircraft 201 taking off as the last Tomcat to launch out on the Last Tomcat Cruise. If you look close enough, you can see that my rank, name, and hometown are written on the starboard (right side) nose landing gear door which is traditional for a PC (Plane Captain) to be assigned a jet.

  • Yeah I remember ...

Yeah I remember when i was a kid, my parents took me and my sister to Canada. While we were there we stopped by a base and watched an F/A-18 take-off. Actually, I got to Langley AFB to watch the air shows there and one of the Canadian F/A-18s perform down there. Very exciting

Well, I'm from Canada, so my favorite is the F/A-18 (but it's to be replaced with F-35 [presumably]), then the F-22, then the F-16, and then the F-14. But I really like jets, so I still like this alot

Yeah The 14 was and is one of the best fighters in the world.. BTW 201 is a F-14D and the engines arent P&W there GE F-110-400's. Better engines than the Pratt & Whitney with more power.

Ever since I saw Top Gun when I was a little kid, this was my favorite (in service) plane. After retirement, I fell in love with the F-22 Raptor, but it could never ever replace my love for the F-14. I'll always love that plane.

They retired the wrong airplane. The F/A-18 is a pile of junk compared to the Tomcat. Anytime Baby!

  • The difference is ...

The difference is the Cat at that point to bow of ship is only about 100 yds. so to give the Aircraft a boost Steam or Pneumatic ejection is Needed ! this give s the aircraft the needed speed to launch But, the aircraft has to be at a certain speed once it's in front of the ship To rise in the Air, IF you notice ,Aircraft drop a split second after launch But, regain from added power in the Engines. Does that answer your Question ?

  • Im not sure, but ...

Im not sure, but i'd guess its the lenght of runway. When they take off from a carrier they use that catapult (and afterburner i guess?). When taking off from airfield they dont have and dont need catapult cause they have longer runway. This is just speculation, not 100% factual information though..
