This is from a Martial Arts galla in Holland in 1995. Bas Rutten and a TKD exponent (Joris Boon - not sure how he spells it....)showing the lighter side of martial art, with this funny demonstration.

Have a good laugh and enjoy fantastic "breaking" demos, Bas` own version of Jean Frenettes famous kata, and some really serious fighting! Enjoy!!

Tell that to Bas Rutten's face. Don't be surprised if he delivers headbutt out of nothing.

  • I do practice ...

I do practice against resisting opponents, at various degrees of resistance up to full. I fully agree that some martial arts do involve looking pretty and exercise, but you're further missing the point that some are not, and that some people do practice in exactly that way, against resisting opponents, in 2-person drills, etc.

  • Today "Live" ...

Today "Live" sparring can be safely done, and is invaluable for developing real timing, distancing and techniques. Still, not all techniques can be safely applied in a full resistance match, the obvious ones being small joint manipulation, joint breaks (e.g. arm bar break-throws), strikes to critical spots (e.g. kick to knee, eye gouges). These can only be passed on well through forms and drills.

It's only in recent history that we've had the benefit of modern advances that have greatly helped MA, namely beter literacy, video recorders, faster and safer travel (exposes us to new cultures), better protective gear and medical facilities. Before this the best way of preserving a fighting art was through forms.

  • you really arent ...

you really arent listening. do you practice those agaisnt fully resiting opponents? whats the point of practicing against air when it would be much more benifitial to try the manuever on someone who is trying to not let themselves be thrown? Dont preach and try to pretend some martial arts arent just about excersize and looking pretty, most chinese (today) are exactly that.

  • Generally that ...

Generally that depends on that kata. A lot of people do kata without knowing any good applications for them, or thinking that all MA is about sparring. Neither is a good thing. There are old kata involving headbutts and trips, throat grabs, groin rips, etc. None of these are impractical. Marines practice some of the same throws that you can find in goju seisan, for example.

yes, against fully resiting opponents, and they were constantly being tested. forms today have NONE of the value they MAY have had then.

  • To defend yourself ...

To defend yourself against your wife? Or you meant martial arts? ;) Seriously, though, battlefield arts, both european and asian, used kata for training for centuries. 2-person kata, generally.

  • I wouldn't say that ...

I wouldn't say that all forms are silly, just that there are a LOT of silly forms out there, either made or performed by people who don't know what they're doing. I've seen people who perform, in all seriousness, very similar to his joking around.
