Coke is still made with cane sugar in Mexico. If you go into a Mexican market in the US and find bottles that say Hecho En Mexico, it'll have sugar instead of corn syrup in it.

It was a gradual change, but there are still some things now still made with cane sugar, but they're hard to come by.

But what about other products, not just soda? Corn syrup is in frickin' everything. Spaghetti sauce, fruit juice, cookies, etc. Even cheese crackers. I'm wondering if the person I was talking to was right when he told me that it wasn't until the early 90s or so that most of those kinds of products dumped sugar for syrup.

By the mid-80s, all pop companies had switched to mostly high-fructose corn syrup, with possibly a tiny bit of sugar in them. The difference is, the non-cola drinks were still using some amount of sugar until the early 1990s. The last I can remember seeing cane sugar on a label of a major pop brand was in the mid 1990s. High fructose corn syrup used in pop is the reason why it goes flat so fast nowadays and the sweetner gels into globs of slime within only a couple days.

I third that. Soda tastes much better in a glass bottle for some reason. I don't know why that is.

Cans are second place IMO. I avoid plastic bottles whenever possible because it seems to me the stuff goes flat faster in those. (This could all be in our heads, though. XD)

MVillani1985: I've been curious about this a long time. You say that by 1983 Coke was already using high fructose corn syrup. Someone once told me a big reason for our obesity epidemic is because corn syrup has largely replaced sugar ever since the early 1990s. (Sugar is horrible for you, of course, but corn syrup is worse because your body can't break it down the same way) That would seem to be contradicted if Coke had already switched by the early 80s, unless they were ahead of everyone else.

Whoa. I was too young to remember, but I've always heard how New Coke was probably the all-time biggest marketing disaster of the 20th century. I DIDN'T know Cosby lent himself to it.

I'll bet he'd burn every last copy of this ad if he could. Sorry, Bill. You can run from your past, but you can't hide.... XD

Very different. I hated it, and was soooo glad to see the classic come back.

It was harsh and a harsh to swallow, I had to turn to pepsi until the classic came back.
