Apple's "Unslow" 3G iPhone commercial pretends to demonstrated the performance of the device over the 3G network. To put it to the test, I took my own 3G iPhone to the heart of AT&T's coverage area in MA (Boylston St. in Boston just across the street from Apple's flagship store).

The video shows a side by side performance comparison running through an identical set of actions.

The results tell the story.

  • It's just apple ...

It's just apple telling you what to think as usual.

Just like with any big company.

  • True it does go ...

True it does go against the false advertisement law that states that companies are compelled to display their goods or services in the same light as a consumer would use them. Apple is a bullion dollar company and probably covered themselves though. just look real close in the fine white print in the commercials background.

  • I understand and ...

I understand and even agree with the comments that 3G is better than EDGE/pretty good/sufficient. I also agree that the iPhone is certainly usable, and maybe better than every alternative.

I don't understand the line of reasoning that goes something like a) the device is too slow to do all of these things as fast as Apple claims it can b) therefore it's ok to misrepresent the speed. Is there some law compelling Apple to make this exact ad?

Being truthful can be so inconvenient sometimes.

  • honestly, the speed ...

honestly, the speed is pretty good. It's pretty obvious it's not going to be the same speed as the commercial. But it did load the page fairly quickly, it's just took a while to load all those pictures. But 3G is still a helluva lot faster than EDGE. It would have taken the entire length of the video to load that same page on EDGE.

  • Of course it's not ...

Of course it's not going to be accurate in the ad. They're not going to wait around for the page to load. 3G is still loads faster than EDGE, and using Wi-Fi at home and work makes the speed issue less important.

  • It constantly ...

It constantly amazes me that the very best thing about Apple is the undiminished hype and marketing something to really envy. As to the substance sure the iphone screen is very nice and slick but thats all it has going for it. Noddy camera and finally 3g well wake up, yawn.

  • Honestly, I'd have ...

Honestly, I'd have to say that if you really think the phone would perform THAT well then you are a bit naive. Sure, the actions working super fast is misleading but you do realize they're comparing it to a 1st generation iPhone right? I have an iPhone 3g and live in a an urban city with plenty of 3g reception. I'd say this video is pretty biased with Apple not in favor. Sure, you have to "wait" but I have yet to grow impatient with anything and with 3g reception it's NOTHING unbearable at all.
