  • Readers, fans, ...

Readers, fans, sorry about the typos above: After "'49?" it's stuff I should have deleted. Also, the bracketed statement should have been "1 writer".
Doobie, I enjoy your deep comments and writing style.
U might agree that Curly as at his greatest 1938 to 1942/3. An under-appreciated comic genius.

  • Me I always thought ...

Me I always thought Curly was at his worst on "Three Loan Wolves", "Monkey Businessmen" and "A Bird in the Head", it is sad watching some of the 1945/46 shorts with Curly struggling with his performances, I also notice by the time Curly's health was starting to detetorate was when Larry started to have bigger roles.

  • Curly was ok in " ...

Curly was ok in "Monkey Businessman" (considered to be the post-"Idiots Deluxe" Curly at his worst); "Three Little Pirates", not bad as a film but it's sad because he's struggling. In some of those '45/46s he seems to be out of it. His best, of course, "3Troubledoers".
[Earlier I said "A Bird...." when I meant "Monkey..." as Curly considered "at his worst" by at least 1].
Lookin' back, Curly was *Curly* '36 to '44.
Have U written To Sony re. the alternate '49?at
    To be sure, some mid-'35

  • I would love to see ...

I would love to see Curly as the chef in "Malice in the Palace" myself, I would love to see what Curly has done during in his post-Stooge years.

Curly does seem to be in very high gear in this short, what did you think of Curly's performances on "Monkey Businessmen", "Three Loan Wolves", "GI Wanna Home", "Rhythm and Weep", "Three Little Pirates" and "Half Wits Holiday"? Me I thought the shorts where Curly was in high gear was "GI Wanna Home" and "Three Little Pirates".

  • Can't agree on UW & ...

Can't agree on UW & MP. Good films but Curly was in very low gear.
"Microphonies" was as good as "Men In Black", but Curly was even more lethargic than in "If A Body...".
I know I obsess a bit on alternate "Malice in the Palace", but if he played The Chef, he would be running from kitchen to dining room, catching & losing the pooch. Seems he was recuperated enuf for J. White to consider "The 4 Stooges".
If that version does exist, but a power-that-be thinks no-one's interested, I'm stunned.

  • He did mean "Three ...

He did mean "Three Little Pirates" as Curly being back to his old self, Edward Bernds did claim that Curly was down on this short, I definitely would agree with you that this film could have been the follow up to "Idiots Deluxe", I thought Curly was on the upside on this short, I sometimes wonder if this short was filmed around the time of "Uncivil Warbirds" and "Micro-Phonies" (both featuring Curly on his mark).

  • I believe Edward ...

I believe Edward Bernds said that Curly was back to his old swelf in "Three Little Pirates" - I wonder if he really meant this film. Judging by Curly's performance, the film could have been the follow-up to "Idiots Deluxe", the last great "Curly".
Does anyone out there know if Sony will include the Curly version of "Malice In The Palace" in the current DVD series?

  • Curly does seem to ...

Curly does seem to be in his "up" periods during this time period, it is really unfortunate to see Curly's health declining and him struggling to perform during his last dozen shorts.
