This is the "Russell Brown technique" for creating masks based on the pixels in your image. I explain what masks are, how they work, and then I show you (quickly) how to make a mask that is based on the image you're working on.

This separates your picture into different sections and lets you change hue, saturation, and other nifty things separately for different parts of your image.

  • Colour range only ...

Colour range only works in certain situations (where edges are very distinct), and the "fuzziness" slider is NOT a replacement for a true alpha-channel mask. Edges are way cleaner using this method -- try them side-by-side and you'll see what I mean.

I use the 'select->colour range' tool a lot as well, this method *is* way more time consuming and often unnecessary. =)

Or you could avoid all of that and just use "color range" tool, and you could have accomplished your task in a matter of seconds instead of wasting time with layer masking.
