'Amazing Grace' is a well-known Christian hymn. The words were written late in 1772 by Englishman John Newton. John Newton (July 24, 1725 -- December 21, 1807) was an Anglican clergyman who had, at one time, been a slaveship master. They first appeared in print in Newton's Olney Hymns, 1779 that he worked on with William Cowper.     This is because the arts aren't about "kinds" or "genres," but artists. I don't care about gospel music either, per se, but there are geniuses who performed gospel music. The same is true for rock and roll, jazz, classical music, etc. Human existence turns on the geniuses, rather than the hangers-on, able to mimic genre-conventions and reproduce product in a similar vein. If we you hear are what most people think represents a given kind of music, we miss the giants who walk among us.
