On board a 737-600 final approach into YLW Kelowna from the flight deck
The autopilot disengage. In most commercial aircraft, you can set it up so the plane will pretty much land itself. In some cases, it will land it's self. This is called an ILS (Instrument Landing System) and is used to guide bing planes in (like in this case, a 737) especially if the weather is bad. Pilot don't just know where the runway is. They must use instruments. So in this case, the were using the ILS but on this runway, the aircraft can't land its self completely so they had 2 do the rest

Makes sense to me.

By doormaneamons [Affiliate User] 1203576552 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removegotta be a pro to land like westjet :D 75~ f/m landings are pro.

By CatFish107 [Affiliate User] 1202191663 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou idiot, the only thing that could mess with and ILS or any other electronics onboard the aircraft are thing sending and receiving signals. god your stupid
By luke7is7cool [Affiliate User] 1202151584 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWow, this person had a camera turned on all the way down to a perfectly safe landing!! How did those pilots do that?!?! Everyone knows that leaving anything electronic turned on during takeoff or landing will crash the plane and erase data recorders. These rules are here for YOUR SAFETY. Bravo brave pilots. You managed to land an uncontrollable aircraft, and probably saved hundreds of lives!!
By CatFish107 [Affiliate User] 1201544309 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIf you have an HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator), and most modern aircraft do, then you can set the opposite to avoid reverse needle sensing, which is otherwise very annoying.
So if they were coming in on runway 34 for a back-course, then they would use the settings seen already up on the OBS (157). It sounds strange, but it works - but only for HSIs.
Try it on flight sim in a 737. Use nav 1 which is normally used in conjunction with the central HSI :)
when you're doing like a loc backcourse for a ILS do you set the front course or the back course for the Course Heading?
By vac4042 [Affiliate User] 1198856242 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIndeed, and as magnetic variation changes throughout the years, these runway numbers may also change in the future.
Having looked at this video again, you can even see 157 dialed up in the OBS selector, so unless they are doing a back-course, it's pretty certain to be runway 16.
or they would round it, so it could be anywhere between 155-164 for RWY 16, and in kelowna it's heading 155*.
By vac4042 [Affiliate User] 1198701098 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAP disingage in the 737, it sounds different depending on the plane.
By vac4042 [Affiliate User] 1198701043 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyeah, but it depends if you're doing a visual or and instrument landing, for the visual you'd have autopilot of for the whole landing, but for the ILS or an other instrument app you would keep the AP on pretty close, or sometimes just as soon as you get the runway in sight if visibility is bad. But in Kelowna's case, the ILS DME 1 RWY 16 APP minimums are 651'.
By vac4042 [Affiliate User] 1198701006 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWestjet should buy a CRJ, that would look cool..
By EdmDude [Affiliate User] 1198147156 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeya man, autopilot stays on until about minimums, which on the ILS in Kelowna is about 200agl
By matrixwade [Affiliate User] 1196505219 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIs the autopilot used for the entire descent? I didn't know it remains engaged for that long.
By toddaalgaard [Affiliate User] 1195380133 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYep it's from the north onto Runway 16. The approach goes over Winfield and Duck lake.
By Calnickel [Affiliate User] 1190907420 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYeah, you have to be aircrew or a company employee now and the cabin has to be full before you are allowed to occupy the jumpseat
By westjetfa [Affiliate User] 1187601597 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThey probably don't let most people do this anymore because of post 9-11 crap right?
By hafjapmatt [Affiliate User] 1187557609 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt's runway 16 - so it's from the north heading south.
Runway numbers are based on runway heading; runway 16 would be 160*
I love the autopilot disengage warning - my favourite.
That alarm was the autopilot disengage warning sound
By rutgerfop [Affiliate User] 1182834410 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhat was that alarm??
By lilgarrett [Affiliate User] 1182775074 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedefinitely from the North. I can see my work!
By congealedmeat [Affiliate User] 1182199186 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNice clip, and a nice view of Kelowna. A bit more info would be nice, especially date, time and direction of landing. (I'm guessing it's from the north)
