  • The autopilot ...

The autopilot disengage. In most commercial aircraft, you can set it up so the plane will pretty much land itself. In some cases, it will land it's self. This is called an ILS (Instrument Landing System) and is used to guide bing planes in (like in this case, a 737) especially if the weather is bad. Pilot don't just know where the runway is. They must use instruments. So in this case, the were using the ILS but on this runway, the aircraft can't land its self completely so they had 2 do the rest

  • you do realise of ...

you do realise of course that the flight crew are flying as per westjet standard procedure...in other words this has nothing to do with them being lazy, this is how westjet wants them to fly. regardless, what exactly is wrong with flying on autopilot until just before you flare? Makes sense to me.

  • Wow, this person ...

Wow, this person had a camera turned on all the way down to a perfectly safe landing!! How did those pilots do that?!?! Everyone knows that leaving anything electronic turned on during takeoff or landing will crash the plane and erase data recorders. These rules are here for YOUR SAFETY. Bravo brave pilots. You managed to land an uncontrollable aircraft, and probably saved hundreds of lives!!

  • If you have an HSI ...

If you have an HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator), and most modern aircraft do, then you can set the opposite to avoid reverse needle sensing, which is otherwise very annoying.
So if they were coming in on runway 34 for a back-course, then they would use the settings seen already up on the OBS (157). It sounds strange, but it works - but only for HSIs.
Try it on flight sim in a 737. Use nav 1 which is normally used in conjunction with the central HSI :)

  • Indeed, and as ...

Indeed, and as magnetic variation changes throughout the years, these runway numbers may also change in the future.
Having looked at this video again, you can even see 157 dialed up in the OBS selector, so unless they are doing a back-course, it's pretty certain to be runway 16.

  • or they would round ...

or they would round it, so it could be anywhere between 155-164 for RWY 16, and in kelowna it's heading 155*.

  • yeah, but it ...

yeah, but it depends if you're doing a visual or and instrument landing, for the visual you'd have autopilot of for the whole landing, but for the ILS or an other instrument app you would keep the AP on pretty close, or sometimes just as soon as you get the runway in sight if visibility is bad. But in Kelowna's case, the ILS DME 1 RWY 16 APP minimums are 651'.
