One of the fun and special traditions enjoyed and shared by the Deaf Community is signing stories using Number or Alphabet hand shapes. In these stories, various hand shapes do not stand for the numbers and letters themselves, but are used as signs or gestures to convey concepts. They are signed in alphabetical or numerical order, and used in amazing ways to sign or act out a story.

This is awesome! I never would've thought of doing this! I'm hard of hearing myself. I know quite a bit of signlanguage. If anyone would like to learn a bit, I'd be more than happy to post a video or two with some other signs. ^.^ Glad people are taking an interest in this.

  • errr...Classifiers ...

errr...Classifiers (CLs) is not the use of handshapes..CLs ARE handshapes that represent an object, a person, but also an action in a sentence
    my two cents...

  • It is not home ...

It is not home signs, it is a use of classifiers, however it is a cultural story telling technique. These stories are common in residential schools. It is like deaf poetry. It is not suppose to be an exact rendition of the sign, just a story! Enjoy and do not be critical! HE IS AWESOME!

I dunno, I'd call it more like Classifiers. Classifiers is the use of hand shapes to make a story or picture. Home sign is just a sign that is used within a family.
