This is the intro to the Basic Physics lecture from the Feynman Lectures on Physics given in 1961 at Caltech. I highly recommend this lecture series. While not all of it is understandable to the lay person, much of it is. Richard Feynman was an inspirational teacher and could illuminate many esoteric concepts in physics with his contagious enthusiasm.
Enjoy.

  • If by mental power ...

If by mental power you mean Intelligence, then no, culture does not affect intelligence.

What do ya all do when your not talking.
    If it's ok to ask?

    Jesus listened, can you.

  • You write replies ...

You write replies without even bothering to read my comments carefully. Feynman was discriminated against in the 30th of the last century! Of course they don't discriminate now. My point, if you have brain to understand it, is that DESPITE discrimination Jews made their contribution.

  • von Neumann and ...

von Neumann and Edward Teller where both of Jewish origins. Did I say anywhere in my comment that there are no scientists among other people?! All I said is that Jewish immigrants in US made great contributions in science, especially physics. You don't see this same level of achievements among immigrants nowadays. It's a phenomena that needs to be studied, in my view. I never mentioned that other people did not contribute. Please read my comments again, but carefully this time.

  • How do you know ...

How do you know that, Feynman, Einstein, von Neumann, Oppenheimer were being discriminated? Like I said, people are people, but if America was that bad, people would start moving out of it. What does a terrorist attack, by some senseless animals, have to do with quota for Jews in colombia and Feynman, which wasn't true. Stick your head our of your ass and see reality for what it is, don't use predefined expectations about the world, accept it for what it is. What a waste of time this was!

  • I created this ...

I created this account solely to reply your dumbass comment. What about people from India, the Asian continent(Tomonaga, Yukawa...) and so on? Heisenberg one of the youngest nobel prize winners wasn't jewish, Gauss a better mathematician then von Neumann wasn't either, Planck wasn't. I am quite certain that Dirac, Newton or Galileo weren't. America like anyplace else is made of people, and people, yourself included, are shitheads. What's the point of your comment, anyway?

  • Alan, your reply is ...

Alan, your reply is a bit bizarre to me. But nonetheless, I think it's fitting that the Nazi's kicked a bunch of scientists out of Europe due to their ethnic heritage, and those same scientists were the ones who invented the atomic bomb as well as cracked their coding system. Hitler was done in by the brain drain created by his own bigotry, as he should've been.

  • I agree, race or ...

I agree, race or ethnic background has little to do with mental power. Culture affects it and shapes it strongly. Einstein could never have made such great achievements if his ancestors had not immigrated to Germany. He was immersed in the deep and strong tradition of German and West math, physics and philosophy. The same applies to Feynman and Oppenheimer. The point I wanna make here is that Jewish immigrants make great contributions in the host country, other people are not that successful.

  • One of the long ...

One of the long held assumptions is that there is a link between someone's "race" and their intelligence quota.(check out Ashley Montagu's work)I may be wrong, but so far no such a link has been scientifically established and tested. Therefore, the reason why great men become great men should not be said to have any relation to what "race" they belong to. In fact there is never one single reason why people reach such heights. several factors came together in a particular order to make it so

  • Read my post again. ...

Read my post again. I wrote "Jews are one of the smartest people". So not the smartest, but one of the smartest. Religion has nothing to do with their intelligence. There must be another factor in work here. But you really should admit the fact that as immigrants Jews made more positive contribution to their new adopted countries than many other people who are also from Middle Eastern countries.

  • He wasn't rejected, ...

He wasn't rejected, he rejected the university. Also I'm going to take issue with your claims that Jews are the 'smartest people' yet only as 'bad' as any one else, that a particular religion renders you more intelligent, and that Feynman and Einstein were indeed jews, not athiests.

  • May be I should ...

May be I should have been more accurate in my claim. Actually Feynman's parents, not himself, were Jewish immigrants from Belarus. The same thing applies to Oppenheimer. Sorry for the inaccurate information. I'm from Middle East and hate it when some governments in the region use hatred against Jews to keep their rein on power. In fact Jews are one of the smartest people and the percentage of bad people among them is the same among any other ethnic group.

  • I didn't know he ...

I didn't know he was rejected from Columbia because of a quota for Jews. But he wasn't an immigrant. He was born in Queens, New York.
