The Big Beast roller coaster opened in 1927 at Detroit's Edgewater Park on 7 Mile Rd & Telegraph Rd. The coaster had several names during it's 54 years including, Thriller, Soul Train & Big Beast. The park sadly closed in 1981.

I also included a bonus clip of the TURBO ride that was at Edgewater Park. Thrillseekers privileged enough to ride one of these monsters should feel lucky as there are none left operating in the USA and possibly the world. Enjoy!

I remember Edgewater Park. But your description of the location is about 2 miles off. It was at 7 mile road and Lahser, not Telegraph. Also does anyone remember the Wild Mouse ride there?

  • Unfortunately there ...

Unfortunately there are no operating Turbos in the US, as far as we know. Only Australia and Brazil claim to have working Turbos. I was awed by the ride in the early 1970's at Idora Park, but I wasn't allowed to ride it. I finally rode the Turbo at Maple Leaf Village and Old Indiana (both defunct) in the early to mid-90s. The same ride was purchased by Conneaut Lake Park but was never reassembled because of maintenance factors. It truly is a wild ride and feels like no other experience.
