    the images themselves were taken by planes overhead, and then placed into the satellite images by folks from google and national geographic. i'm actually looking at it right now on Google Earth, so it's not fake.

    It isn't fake in that it really is present and viewable in Google Earth by anyone, but I'm absolutely sure that Google planted them into the program as easter eggs for people to find. There are lots of those in Google Earth.
