Sister Golden Hair Cover

Sister Golden Hair was yet another number one hit by the great acoustic rock band America, and one of my favorite guitar strums of all time.

America's history is unique and filled with fortunate coincidences.

America was founded in England in the early-70s by three young men with American fathers in the U.S. Air Force stationed near London.

Gerry Beckley's mom was British, and so was Dewey Bunnell's. In fact Dewey was born in England. Both of Dan Peek's parents were born in the U.S.

Because of their fathers' Air Force careers, all three had lived all over the world, including the U.S. They met in high school in London, played together at different times, competed against each other in a battle of the bands, and graduated together. But all three never played together in high school. They formed the band a year after they graduated high school.

Legend says they longed to get back to America where everything cool seemed to be happening. One day they noticed a now-famous Americana-brand juke box in a frequent haunt and decided to name the band "America."

Their first hit, A Horse With No Name, was Number 1, and their first album was also Number 1. They won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1972. They were Warner Brothers top-selling band during the 1970s, and have continued to put out a sprinkling of albums ever since, leading up to "Here and Now" which came out in 2007 to good reviews.

The band is known for its beautiful melodies, silky smooth vocals, colorful, romantic lyrics, and magnificent acoustic guitar playing. America tends to stay a bit lighthearted, never trying to get too heavy. I think that's an important ingredient to their longevity. Their music simply makes me feel good.

Each of the three wrote several giant hits including...

Dewey Bunnell: Horse With No Name, Tin Man, Ventura Highway (which to me has the most beautiful acoustic guitar parts in any hit song in history)

Gerry Beckley: I Need You, Sister Golden Hair, Daisy Jane

Dan Peek: Lonely People, Don't Cross the River, Today's the Day

Now that is talent!

Dan Peek left the band in the late-70s and he's had a successful Christian Rock career, also producing albums to this day.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I'm having computer problems.

    Thanks for your kind comments!

Yes I did all of the music you hear on this song.

I use a Spectral computer designed for recording. I use the Protools Digesign 6.4 recording application. I use SM 58 microphones.

I recommend buying an Apple computer that comes with a recording program called Garage Band and finding out what else you need to record.

    Good luck!!!!

AJ - Verrry good! Did you do the entire backing track? If you did, I'm even more impressed! I'm thinking of recording my own music. Do you have computer software or do you have a stand-alone 8 or 16-track recorder? What do you suggest (I'm not a high-tech guy)?

If Gerry and Dewey are bold and friendly for doing Eleanor Rigby, then so are you for doing this song. I thought it was good. I think you could help out in the opening act department.
