Three of the largest viking ship replicas built i Norway on the same video: the knarr Saga Siglar, the Oseberg replica Dronningen and the Gokstad replica Gaia.
The clip was shot in Trondheim in Norway in 1991, when Gaia was about to begin its trans-Atlantic voyage to New York in the US. In 1992 both Saga Siglar and Dronningen were lost in a storm outside of Sevilla in Spain. Read more about these ships on http://www.vikingskip.com
Saga Siglar, Dronningen og Gaia i en og samme video, filmet på Nedre Elvehavn i Trondheim i 1991. To av skipene sank i en storm året etter. Ler mer om skipene på http://home.online.no/~joeolavl/viking/index.htm

  • I saw the Saga ...

I saw the Saga Siglar in Manistee Michigan, on a very foggy morning. It broke through the mist like it was passing through the very veil of time... amazing craft! Very good to see film of it on the web, I was greatly saddened to find out that it was lost in a storm.

    Thanks for posting this footage!

  • Saga Siglar ...

  • Both Saga Siglar ...

Both Saga Siglar and Gaia had inboard diesel engines. Mostly for safety reasons and backup during their long voyages across the oceans. In general, they relied on the sail, though. Dronninga had a small outboard engine in this video.

  • All three viking ...

All three viking ship in this video was built by crafters from the same family; Sigurd Bjørkedal and his sons Jakob, Ottar and Dag Inge. The ships were built in their workshop in Bjørkedalen valley in western Norway. Their family have built lapstrake vessels since the medieval age. Contractor of Gaia was Ragnar Thorseth, funded by Knut Ulstein Kloster. So the project was a private initiative, not governmental.

  • They are wonderfull ...

They are wonderfull. Really I love Gaia much more than Emma Maersk. Who built it? Government or some volounters? I mean is the simple club of reinactment could create this wonder?
