She was a Colombian girl called Omayra Sánchez, victim of the Nevado del Ruiz vulcano that wiped out the Armero town in 1985. She was stuck in the mud, water and what was left of her home for 3 days, even over her family's dead bodies. There only possible way to help her was to remove her legs, but without surgery she'd die. The other option was a mechanical vaccum, but there was no available so she starved to death. It was very controversial because the government was indifferent to the victims

Despite unimaginable suffering and pain, there were amazing goodness and courages shone through some of these pictures that give us the great hope that mankind is capable of working together to make this world a better place.

Red Cross rescue workers had apparently repeatedly appealed to the government for a pump to lower the water level and for other help to free the girl. Finally rescuers gave up and spent their remaining time with her, comforting her and praying with her. She died of exposure after about 60 hours.
