Would you please elaborate? A lot of people seem to say that, but I honestly don't see the advantage. Their is a huge cost to not much of benefit... I am afraid to cut over and be disappointed.

  • I guess that ...

I guess that statement is relative. I have a good job, a comfortable home, insurance, and a nice family. However, maintaining that cost a lot of money, and I don't have a lot left over for hobbies.

  • For distorted ...

For distorted guitare I used Native Instruments Guitar Rig, for clean guitar, I use Amplitube. For the bass, I either go direct from my bass amp, or through a pre-amp and into Amplitube Ampeg SVX (I actually prefer the bass amp actually). I didn't use any of my amps or mics on this - all the computer. Although I do have some great amps that sound very good live, recording is seems to turn out better with the computer amp programs.

  • The EMU does not ...

The EMU does not have a pre-amp (mine is the PCI 0404) and so yeah... you need a way to boost that signal.

You can tweak the Patchmix software to adjust the input somewhat, then in the guitar programs (NI Guitar Rig or Amplitube) you can increase the input side also. However if your input signal is weak (like a plugging in a guitar straight in), nothing works very well except some sort of pre-amp. I use either my mixer, a guitar pod, or a pre-amp. That is the only way I know how to do it.

  • The very cheapest ...

The very cheapest way to do it is to go to Radio Shack and by a line booster (if you are using 1/8th inch input like the headphone jack size). For me, I use a pre-amp or my guitar pod. You can also pick up a mixer (probably the best cost/benefit) for really cheap. If you only want to boost one track, you can get a mixer for under 30 bucks that may even have phantom power. Let me know what your specific set up is and I can tell you more options.
