Early performance of Brel's most often covered song, known in English by Rod McKuen's adaptation "If You Go Away." English subtitles are a literal translation of the lyric as Brel intended it. Not a love song, Brel tells us, but a song of lacheté, weakness, though most would disagree.

  • "Don't go way from ...

"Don't go way from me" is a more informal, colloquial way of saying "Don't leave me."(As in," Go way from my window---Dylan" ) The meter has same feet and stresses as "Ne Me Quitte Pas" so I thought it would be better to read as Brel was singing. Also, in English we would say, "The translation leaves a bit to be desired," not " " is a bit to be desired" Thanks for commenting. I like to hear from people.

    Wow,

I only knew this song as a result of the Scott Walker version which I like very much. But Brel was a genius and this song is one of if not his very greatest.

    Fantastic

bacsiii2000, I know how you feel but I learnt the hard way too, so now I just don't let any of them hurt me any more. The more you show that you care, the worst the reciprocation becomes. I hope by now that you're on the road to recovery and I wish you well my friend.
