  • MY cousin is VERY ...

MY cousin is VERY into the TV version as well. But really, if you're a Gunsmoke fan grab some radio shows online, I think you'll be really impressed with the acting, the stories,(alot of which were later used in the TV version) and the real dark quality the show had. Other regulars were Parley Baer as Chester and Howard Mc Near as Doc. Both these actors went on to TV in the Andy Griffith show where Parley Baer played Mayor Stoner and Howard McNear played Floyd the Barber.

  • KNX 1070 News Radio ...

KNX 1070 News Radio play radio dramas at 9pm many nights; Gunsmoke radio version (Conrad) was a station favorite BUT voices sounded like over-stressed "radio acting" ~ a bit hammy.

As regular viewer of the TV version, I now know why Arness had to be the TV face of the show. Conrad was ideal as the overwieght CHP detective in "HIGHWAY PATROL" but not quite the mantinee-idol Eric Strada..

  • i faintly recall ...

i faintly recall hearing one episode of the radio version. Conrad had an excellent voice but I like the TV version of Gunmoke. The great story lines, characters, acting, made it a true Americana original. I still watch it today whenever I can because they don't make television like that anymore, shame.

  • Sorry folks but ...

Sorry folks but William Conrad WAS, IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE MATT DILLON. Do yourselves a favor. Listen to the Radio version of Gunsmoke. FAR SUPERIOR, more realistic, gritty, dark and even sad. He may not have been astetically as pleasing, but William Conrad Created Matt Dillon, gave him depth, soul, and Character. Arness was a faint copy AT BEST.

Wayne, however, offered to introduce the first episode of "GUNSMOKE", primarily as a favor to James Arness (who was previously under contract to him). This was seen on September 10, 1955, before the episode "Matt Gets It" began.
