I think that Keef ...
I think that Keef just took his Bass E string off for a few years on one of his guitars, so that he wouldn't have to mute the D all the time - while he was in this tuning. At least that is what I heard and I have seen a few videos where it appears there is only 5 strings on his guitar at the time. Great lesson by the way.
