Big deal. I am a classically-trained pianist and played jazz trumpet for years. I also had some forays into the music realm. My point is that I have a very good ear for tones, chords, and music. So my judgment holds. Whether some burned out rocker or wannabe rocker "puts any weight" on my judgment is unimportant to me. But the judgment that his voice is terrible on this song is unarguable. Like I said below, I don't pretend to know the cause, but the likely one is age. common 70s problem.

Actually I do. His voice deterioration cannot be attributed to the old "live vs. studio" thing altogether. For this night, his voice was shot. Whether it's from overuse, age, a tumor, polyps, illness, or whatever I don't pretend to know. But it's bad. Very bad.

proffromgview I have to say this about your comment that I have no ear for music. I have been a professional musician since I was 8. I toured the world for over 30 years. I have produced 31 records. I have owned a recording studio for 30 years and I am a singer as well. So much for your theory. I guess I don't put much weight on your opinion, critique, or your so called grading system. That's what is unarguable.

proffromgview I have listened to several other BC vids posted here and he sings worse according to your "grading system" on many of these when he was indeed in his prime. His voice has not deteriorated...it's called a "live show". In the studio you do multiple takes til it's right.. live is one shot. But I am sure you must know that....huh?

Are you able to understand an argument? I don't care WHY his voice deteriorated, just that it did and rather significantly. I don't grade for "effort," the real world is not like kindergarten, I grade on results. And his voice is horrible in this recording; it is not just "one bad note," it is the entire song. So you're the idiot, and you have no ear for music. I have repeatedly said that I am a big BC fan, and it is transparently easy to see the huge drop-off in his quality. Unarguable.

Amen brother! proffromgview has not a clue. His profile contains Neal Young so that speaks volumes about my trust of his vocal judgement.

Till you have a clue as to what stresses are put on the human voice while touring night after night, I am having a lot of trouble hearing anything you say regarding singing. He sang his ass off and if you are focused on a rasp or a bad note then you are a clueless and self proclaimed idiot.

I agree...at his prime. There is so other video (I'm too lazy and can't remember the link) of him singing Bad Company, and his voice is clear and strong--a HUGE contrast to the version you and I are discussing. Don't get me wrong: I like Dylan, Stewart, and other gravelly voiced singers, but that is their schtick, always has been. My point with Rogers is his obvious deterioration. My hope is that that rasp does NOT come from a tumor or polyp.

I'm not looking for perfection in rock n' roll singers and I could give two S**ts about Bad Co. My point is that I believe Rodgers to be one of the best singers in the blues-based rock genre of any age, period. I am certainly not alone in that opinion. Who do you think is a better singer in this vein?...

If you were right, then why is it that all the other live performances from his peak years don't HAVE that "rasp and cracks?" Can't answer that one, can you? These so-called "natural beauty of the genre" come from heavy doses of smoke (from various things), age and deterioration of the vocal chord lining, and just plain tough living. It can be temporary (like after a particular bad night) or lasting (Keith Richards sounds like dust in an old gate hinge). Rogers' voice simply deteriorated.

And if you ahd ever seen them you would know that this is usually one of the last songs of the night....tough to go all night and keep your voice

Perhaps you are a Josh Grobin lover or a seventies prog rock follower with an affinity for vibrato.lol No offense. As we are the same age, I do apologize for the 'kid' crack. sorry, but your emotional response only misses the FACTS. His voice breaks repeatedly, raspy, and even off-key at times. That is bad, "kid." I like BC's stuff as well as anyone, but this performance as recorded here was simply sub-par, and it isn't even close to his sound on the albums. You're hearing with your heart, not your ears. Your loyalty is admirable even if your judge of tones is not...."kid."

Could you be more wrong? No, you F**king couldn't.lol That was a gripping and emotionally powerful performance of a classic song. His tone and his ability to run up and down notes is unparalleled in rock music today. He hasn't lost a step in 40 years, kid.

he's either past his prime or a shallow approximation of what the technology aided him in the studio. He's breaking off the notes, and it doesn't sound like it's by choice. Too bad. Great song.
