There's nothing bad about what you're saying, and I don't want to offend you, but take this as my view. Ultimately, karate is a defensive art. Sometimes the most efficient way of being defensive is to be offensive. You can throw the first punch, only if you can't run away or have no other alternative to fighting. Get what I'm saying?

kumites are extremelty hypocritical towards shotokan...correct me if im wrong but isnt the like main motto something like dont be first attack? kumites kinda get rid of that...then again if it didnt there wouldnt be a fight just two guys atring each other down

2nd Kyu = Brown belt. The tint is funky because of the camera. The black belt matches can be found in other videos put up by the home dojo's students. Most of the black belt matches that day were sloppy IMO. They would have fit in with my group (combined beginner/int. sparring). This year's tournament was a little cleaner but I had some grievances with some very strange scoring practices (nothing biased, just odd), i.e. having to take a full step back for a point to count, no follow through etc.
