I remember listening to this song many years ago. Neil Diamond did a good job with this song, but Joni Mitchell is the original singer. This video is a great memory of her singing a classic. Keep up the great work Joni.

I like both versions, the one from when she was a kid... And the other from a woman with a lifetime full of experiences. Well done Joni!

It is so much better than her early version - it is full of all the feelings and experiences she gathered through her life. Just wonderful - no other words for it!!!

This version doesn't even compare to her golden days of the late 60's/early 70's. It's OK but sorry, it's not nearly as beautiful as her golden period. This is good 'ol shmaltz.

I never really liked the original version of this song, though I'm a big Joni Mitchell fan generally. The presentation was a bit light and bouncy. Didn't seem to fit, to me.

But this new version is gorgeous.

She's really experienced all the things she was singing about now. Even Vince Mendoza's orchestration manages to stay the right side of the line between emotional and his usual saccharine.

As for Joni, she liked and was influenced by black music and musicians (including her collaboration with/tribute to Mingus), and the respect is mutual (eg Herbie Hancock's recent tribute to her).

This is such a lovely song.
Sung the only way it should be with lots of passion by Joni.
The backing musicians are excellent as well.

Even if the songs have the same lyrics and tune, I think you have to see them as two different songs showing different emotions and meanings. This song is the song of an older woman, who's felt love's pain. It's more poignant, sorrowful, but I would also say deeper and more wonderful. Plus not all songs can be happy, you need to strike a balance, I think this version does.
