That's how I start my class. If anyone has any evidence or tested hypothesis to refute anything that I tell them in this class, they can present it. If not, they cannot bring their opinion to the contrary. It seems to work. The "I'm Catholic" bit was when I started a few yrs back, now I use the scientific method to thwart the comments. I should have mentioned this in my post.

That S**ks . You shouldn't have to be dishonest about your religious beliefs or lack thereof.

Do you teach in a public school? If you're in the US, the constitution protects separation of church and state so you can simply decline comment.

Or, since you're in a science class, you could always ask the student to come up with a method of testing the god hypothesis since they proposed it.

You should hang in my area for a spell and get the full dose of stupidity. I teach Biology in high school, so I REALLY get to see what religious indoctrination can do to our youth. It is sad. Each new class starts with the usual question directed towards me, "Do you believe in God?". To keep peace I just say , "I'm Catholic" (used to be). This allows me to keep teaching without heckling going on. Sad.
