Once upon a time, many, many years ago, domestic commercial air travel in Australia was strictly controlled by government regulations. As a result, there were just two major domestic airlines - the government-owned Australian and the privately-owned Ansett (well, there were other players, but none of them were allowed to provide direct links between the five largest cities).

So, with the arrival of deregulation in 1990, Ansett (who had enjoyed quite a privileged position for many years) put on a brave face and boldly claimed with this somewhat uplifting ad that now "the shackles are off", Ansett were free to provide a better, cheaper service.

The beginning of the end for Ansett?

  • Ansett were going ...

Ansett were going down well before Air NZ came along, in fact this ad really was the beginning of the end. Deregulation did no good thing for Ansett, why do you think News Corp/TNT wanted to sell it so badly? Although Air NZ did take on a bit too much, their own operations were starting to fail at the time of purchase of Ansett.

  • Shame this ...

Shame this Beautiful Airline (worlds best ever)died. More should have been done to save it. Air NZ Fucked things up. Qantas / Jetstar and Virgin Blue are crap compared to Ansett and Jeff Dixon is no better than a Politition, he cares more about Profits than passenger well being, even wanting to source out our servicing to China (how bad would that be) Australia has a Bad record for loosing good things, notably great buisness. I wonder if we Australians will ever learn from our stupid mistakes.
