This is video of a severe thunderstorm in Dayton, Tennessee with a lot of frequent and vivid lightning. This thunderstorm occurred on March 29, 2002. I also filmed the TV, where TWC's severe weather expert, Dr. Greg Forbes, is showing the doppler radar, which is showing the intense line of severe thunderstorms heading right toward where I am, which is in southern Rhea County, Tennessee. I am at a friend's house who my family has known for years up on the balcony of a 3-story house on a 2,000 foot mountain.

Don't sweat it. I don't know about gazeyre, but I'm just playing around. U do sound excited, but if I was in a storm like that, I'd be excited too.

Yes it does. That guy who spoke on the dangers of lightning at the MSU Symposium renewed my appreciation of the dangers of lightning. Should metorologists place more emphasis on this?

I've heard that lightning kills more people a year on average in the U.S. than tornadoes and hurricanes.

As a parent myself, I understand their feelings on that, Brian. When I took video of the thunderstorms here at daybreak Saturday I left my camera on the front porch and only went out long enough to move it. Lightning scares me more than tornadoes because it is completely unpredictable and is so deadly.

  • In the first place ...

In the first place tornadoes are very rare in this mountainous area in southeastern Tennessee, although there was one in the 80s that took out some trees right there at this camp and in the second place you can't guess what EF-scale rating a tornado is when it is on the ground - that is based solely on the damage that the tornado caused after it has passed.

Hmmm I paused it at 1:56 and I found what looks to be a small tornado about EF-1 on the ground.

I was very excited. I only got 2 hours of sleep that night, I was so excited. Shortly before I filmed this, I hurt my toe playing basketball and had to have surgery and 2 pins put in.

Yes, the power went out. This is not where I live, though. We were visiting friends who run a christian camp. But, yes their power went out. Watch the clock in the video change from 9:09 to 9:11 p.m. which is @ 5:18 and then watch the rest. No lights.
