This brings up the true reality of racism in British society. Growing up as a South Asian in Britain, I was constantly faced with racism on every account, even though I was born in Britain. That's cool. I have a typical Indian name with the "v" sounding like a "w". So ppl pronounce my name with the "V" sound. I correct them, and they try again, and if they can't get it, they just can't get it. Besides, I give ppl the option of calling me by my last name which is nice.

When I worked in Indochina my first name, also a common Asian last name, was often ignored and I would be called by the second half of my name. It took but a moment to explain that North Americans list their given name first and their surname second and I was always sure to thank the person for acknowledging my name at all.

A person can at least try to pronounce the name correctly. My named gets butched up all the time and I don't get angry; I either correct them if they want me to, or I just leave it as it is.
