  • I cannot ...

I cannot contributed to the technical discussions as I do not have the insight- all I know is that Ravel was touched by God when he composed this. I can't add anything further.

  • Even though I do ...

Even though I do agree that this is a charming performance, I do have to agree with Freud in that the rubato is a bit excessive. Yes. There's no doubt that there are hints of jazz within the piece, but isn't that all the more reason to tone down the rubato? (Since rubato is more of a classical concept anyways?)
Also, I have to agree with Freud that despite the external influences of Jazz, this is essentially an impressionist piece which should be played as such. Just my 2 cents...

  • In my opinion, to ...

In my opinion, to say Ravel is "only" an Impressionist seems a bit poor, dear Sigmund. Actually, there is something about "An American in Paris" (a masterpiece, in fact) in this concert. He composed both piano concerts in 1931-32, soon after his American tour, where he could admire Gershwin´s music. You should have recognised the influences of jazz music in the first mvt., which makes this interpretation wholly justified.

The Royal Edition from SONY Classical is a great one, you will also have access to Liszt and Rachmaninov music within this edition, and Leonard Bernstein is the one who plays the Ravel concert, like this video.

  • A bit heavy on the ...

A bit heavy on the rubato and he misses the ambiguity of the transition near the "climax", making it more American in Paris than Impressionistic French, but thanks for the download so that we can notice this!

Very nice. Mr. Bernstein doesn't reach the heights of, say, Argerich, or the perfection of Michelangeli, but I could listen to this version more than once.
