How to Make a Fishing Net (Doing the Knot)

Do you meen the net making shuttles? They are the tools that contain the spool of tread/line to make the net. They could also be described as net making needles. You only need one of those. I have used a second one as a net tensioning spacer, you could use a blank piece of material that is the same outer size. My shuttles are made from wood, but I have also got others made from Aluminium and Nylon .Hope this helps.

I guess you probably could do it by hand, I have never tried this method. I do think it would make it a lot more hard work as you would have to pull through all the thread/line that you are using and getting the knots tight would be very awkward. If you try this please let me know how you get on, I would find it most interesting. I still advise using the net shuttles.

Unfortunatly, I live in the UK. So I really can't help you their. You could have a go at crafting your own needles.

It did take me a little while to get the hang of it, but it does come in time.Once you have got the hang of tieing the knot pay paticular attention to getting the net loop size even and the knot in the right place, then as you continue you will find that your net will be of better quality and you will become faster with experience (DO NOT RUSH, SPEED WILL COME IN THE END).

I dont see why it wouldnt work, a net to catch fish should be strong enought to catch a puck or a ball. ** Make sure that your know are tight. **

Thank you so much for the clip on tying fishnet. I learned (many years ago) to tie fishnet in school, but over thhe years I forgot. Now I find all sorts of cool things I could make and fix if I could just remember. Your clip was all I needed to jog the old brain.

I have never actually used my nets, So far it has just for the craft of making them. I demonstrate Saxon(Dark age) fishing techniques to the public at shows. I would like to get into the practical trapping side of things and am considering applying for my crayfish licence. Hope you enjoyed it.

I make all kinds of nets, too. Working on one right now as a matter of fact. It's going to fit over a frame to make a fish/turtle trap.
