This is true. I've actually been able to do the same thing with a homemade backstage pass. All you have to do is mention you're playing and show a pass and you're in. The pass doesn't even have to have your face or club name on it. Only some places require special wrist bands even if you're an artist playing the venue and they'll send you over to the promoter or club owner to get one.
