Invented by Mr. Reidar Finsrud, the whole machine is placed inside a glass mount, to prevent visitors who view the machine in the gallery from touching it.
A steel ball (about 2.7 inch diameter, 20 pound) is rolling on an aluminum track, about 25 inches in diameter, placed horizontally. Three pendulums, about 45 inches long with tunable weights at the lower end, controls three horse-shoe magnets that the steel ball has to pass by on the track. Embedded in the track is a (mechanical) controlling/timing mechanism. It looks like a steel wire bent into a triangular track, 5 inches long. The ball rolls over it and pushes the wire down through a slot in the track. This affects one of the pendulums and regulates its swinging motion. The steel ball has not stopped revolving for months.

I would like to thank tiroirdelmare for making the footage longer, so you can get an idea of how it works, Thanks tiroirdelmare :)

Perpetual Motion

  • Perpetual Motion?

I want to congradulate you on this invention. It appears to be real unlike many videos I have seen. The energy to operate this device seems to come from the decaying magnetic fields from the magnets. This could last for a very long time maybe even 100 years. The US patent office indicates that the use of magnetics in perpetual motion mchines is only under consideration. So far the only perpetual motion that truely exist is something moving in outer space far from the atmosphere of a planet. In any case keep up the great work!

  • you say magnets ...

you say magnets lose energy after time and say the key is in the solar system. but just like a magnets pull, planets and stars will also fade away. and if you think about it in another way other than stars or the planets dying off, the reason we are held in orbit is because of other huge bodies of mass pulling and pushing on us without physically touching, a lot like magnetism.

  • This was on a show ...

This was on a show i watched and the guy has it locked in a safe.
As the ball rotates it passes under magnets and runs over litte ramps that swing the weights down below.
The track falls in front of the ball so the ball is running down hill all the time.
The track up and down motion is controled by the magnets and weights .
I would like to see someone inspect it for any tricks . But it does look real.

  • Sure it takes ...

Sure it takes energy to make a permanent magnet but once made it is permanent as the name implies and it cannot be undone without heating or applying a strong alternating field. One cannot extract energy from a permanent magnet. It is obviously an elaborate toy with an energy source like the "perpetual" gadgets sold in novelty shops that use a hidden induction coil and battery.

  • Its not perpetual ...

Its not perpetual motion because thats impossible! However it is about 99.5% efficient and losses only 1/25 of a second per day in speed! Even if it isnt free energy...it should be something that should developed to generate energy!

  • Cool device. but ...

Cool device. but magnets eventually will loose their magnetism. i dont know if i sound really dumb saying this but an example of prepetual motion to me is the solar system. earth going roatating around the sun in a continues form nonstop. i reckon that thought holds the key to prepetual motion.

Energy has mass. A spring that is coiled weighs more than a spring that is not coiled. Strange to think of it like that.

  • "Magnets are no ...

"Magnets are no more an energy source than are springs." - I want to point out this statement is true, and as an analogy for how magnetic domains are moved it's pretty good. It just takes a lot of energy to move them, and the springyness is in the field (it readily returns the energy done in working against it) rather than the domains, but if you keep using the field to create energy, the field *has* to eventually weaken. In this PMM, you must realise the low level of work being done in fact.

  • How do you think ...

How do you think magnets are made? By forcing the magnetic domains in the magnetic material into alignment - this takes work, ie input of energy. As you use a magnet to do work - ie transfer energy - those domains become increasingly disordered as they returen to their natural, randomised state and the magnetic field weakens. Read up on how magnetic materials are made if you want to know more.
