The DOF preview button is showing you an exact image of the ammount of light being let into the lens. It's how you use the other exposure settings/technniques on the camera that give you the final clearer image.

It therefore seems a useless function. i would love some advice on this.

no, it should be the same. if you want the sharpest possible image, go for prime lenses.
