As the first internationally acclaimed manga comic book and Japanese animation artist, Osamu Tezuka deserves his title as Japan's 'God of Comics.' Tezuka first serialized Astro Boy in newspapers and print in 1963. His beloved creation later became Japan's first animated TV series, and was the first work of Japanese animation to break international boundaries by appearing on North American Television. From 1973 to 1978, Tezuka's Black Jack ran in the pages of Shonen Champion magazine, and received a live-action treatment in Nobuhiko Obayashi's 1977 feature film Stranger in Her Eyes. Though director Osamu Dezaki together with his frequent collaborator Akio Sugino attempted to revive the character in 1993 with an animated series, it wasn't until the 1998 feature film Burakku jakku (Black Jack), nearly 20 years after his creation, that Dr. Black Jack got the recognition and careful treatment he deserves.
