Actual video of one of the greatest tennis matches ever contested, Marat Safin Versus Roger Federer in the Semi-Finals of the Aussie Open in 2005.
Let it be known that Safin here stopped Federer from having the greatest year in tennis history. He certainly would have beat Lleyton Hewitt in the final, a guy he pounded just a few months earlier in the US Open, 6-0,7-6,6-0. Few people remember that in 2005, Federer had just 4 losses... FOUR. If he had won this match and the final over Hewitt, and does what he does for the rest of the year, he goes 83-3. 3 losses. Best tennis year ever. But that didn't happen, and that's why Safin's victory here was so critical.
You can name the losses Federer had in 2005 on one hand, and all of them were extremely close matches except one. 1) This epic battle with Safin. 2)Loss to Gasquet in Monte Carlo 6-7,6-2,7-6, despite having 3 match points. 3)Loss to Rafael Nadal in the French Open 6-3,4-6, 6-4,6-3. No losses then till the last match of the year! From June to December, no losses! 4) Then he loses in the final of the Tennis Masters Cup to David Nalbandian in surely one of the top 10 matches of the decade, 6-7,6-7,6-2,6-1,7-6. Here's a link to that match http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmvej7_PfkY&feature=related

This is why this match is one of the top matches of all time, when Safin, playing Roger Federer at his peak(age 23-24), stopped the Greatest Tennis Player of all time.

There is a song playing yes, but my video also has the sound of the match(hits). I personally wish more tennis highlight videos were shown like this, rather than 100 percent music. It's just more emotional, and dramatic I feel with the sound of the game and the commentary also. Hope you like =)
-2005 Australian Open Semifinal M Safin VS R Federer 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 9-7

My personal ranking of the best matches in the past 5 years on the ATP Tour:
1) Wimbledon 2008 Final Nadal v Federer
2) This One! hahahaha
3) Rome 2006 Final Nadal v Federer

  • Federer is gracious ...

Federer is gracious in defeat .............. but only when it is defeat to a select few. He is always gracious to Nadal, and always gracious towards Safin, win or lose, as he really respects these two, views them as players of at least equal skill an ability (physically, if not mentally).

  • Now you have to add ...

Now you have to add Nadal v. Verdasco, Australian Open 2009...probably #1...I wish it was a final instead of a semi.

  • That's why Safin's ...

That's why Safin's the most talented player I've ever seen. He's not the best, as mentally he's weak, but good lord, if he just commits himself, he can, and did, go toe-to-toe with Federer playing well at his prime, and beat him. He is the only man I have ever seen play Federer in his prime (2004-06), on a non-clay court, when Federer played well, and won. Long live this match, the greatest match ever, even better than Wimbledon final '08.
