Rachel Alexandra cemented herself as one of the best fillies of all-time in a race for the ages, as she set a suicidal pace and then was all out under Calvin Borel to hold off a bold charge from Macho Again to win the $750,000 Woodward Stakes (gr. I) by a head in electrifying fashion Sept. 5 at Saratoga.
Sent off at 1-5, Rachel Alexandra stayed perfect in eight starts this season and became the first female to win the prestigious Woodward in which she faced older males for the first time. Only one other 3-year-old filly had ever run in the Woodward—Summer Guest, who was third in 1972.
The victory also makes the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro the first 3-year-old filly to win a grade I unrestricted route race on the dirt in New York since the system of grading races began in 1973. It almost certainly locked up Horse of the Year honors too, which would make her the first filly to earn that award since Busher in 1945.

  • mik655, it's quite ...

mik655, it's quite common in Europe, in fact in the 70's and 80's they just owned the Arc. San San, Ivanjica, Detroit, All Along (HOY in US), Allez France, Gold River, Three Troikas, Akiyda. In fact, the Bloodhorse just had an article called "Ladies Day" about the fact in 10 years, 24 mares won or placed.
