That was the end of that optimistic move to give Germany, and by extension, Europe and the rest of the world, the prospect of a more just and prosperous future, via great infrastructure projects like Maglev and High-Speed Rail (but Maglev is the true wave of the future). Correct me if I'm wrong, but was it not the "green" faction in Chancellor Schröeder's coaltion govt which effectively blocked the first intercity maglev line in Germany? I understand it was because the line would cross a field which contained an endangered species of wildflower?

Nevertheless many people are still a little bit disappointed, that the Berlin-Hamburg Transrapid was not realized in 1999, altough financing was already guaranteed. Instead of this they built a highspeed-train route. The same happened to the "Ruhrgebiet-Transrapid" in 2003 from Düsseldorf-Dortmund. Nowadays many people regret this like it would have been a "mismanagement". The Transrapid for commercial uses is already available since the early 90th, some politicians are the biggest enemies.

Hi wowiejunior: No, but preplanning is finished. The politicans are negotiating about the distribution of the last 10% of financing between Federal Government and Land "Bavaria". As the federal government gave green light today it's up to Bavaria to increase it's participation and finish this negotiations. As the government is highly interested in the Transrapid, it's almost sure that we will listen the official starting signal in a couple of days.

Very glad to read this (if the newage greens don't sabotage it again as they did last time), but I believe it's like the Shanghai line: downtown to airport — not a big deal. We need someone — the people! — who have the courage to stand up to the oligarchy and get their govt to mandate serious intercity and international, transcontinental lines. I believe there is going to be a double-guideway line Shanghai — Hangzhou: 200 km, which will be the first intercity line.
